[00:00:16] Welcome to Ink Drinkers, a literary tea party podcast where we discuss books and drink tea.
[00:00:30] Apologies in advance if you hear Teddy screeching in the background. I don't know what to do with him today. He's being a little menace.
[00:00:41] He's just lonely. He just wants some attention.
[00:00:46] Well, he's got it.
[00:00:48] Yeah.
[00:00:48] So, hello.
[00:00:50] Hi.
[00:00:52] How was the tea farm?
[00:00:53] It was great. I told Jamie when I got here, I totally forgot to bring the tea that I purchased from the tea farm for this very episode.
[00:01:01] Which is called the Friendship Blend.
[00:01:02] It is. We will do it on the next episode if I remember. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna make sure I have it for the next episode.
[00:01:11] Yeah, it was really cool. So, for the backstory, Michael and I's anniversary was November 16th, six years.
[00:01:19] Happy anniversary.
[00:01:22] A lot has happened in six years. Six years, two kids, life, career change.
[00:01:29] Mm-hmm.
[00:01:30] True.
[00:01:31] Lots of stuff.
[00:01:33] So, anyways, we were trying to figure out something that we weren't gonna be very far away, but that still was gonna be enjoyable.
[00:01:41] And, um, he found a tea farm in Amy, Louisiana, which is just really odd and did not know that it, that existed.
[00:01:51] Um, they're a pretty small operation.
[00:01:53] Um, and it's much more rare than we understood.
[00:01:59] So, there's one in California, one somewhere else.
[00:02:03] There's not that many in the United States.
[00:02:05] Um, what I did find out about tea, which I guess I could have just Googled but never thought to do so, is that it's all from the same plant.
[00:02:13] Like, all different types of tea.
[00:02:15] Maybe not every tea, but, um, white tea, black tea, green tea, it's all produced from the same plant.
[00:02:21] It's how they harvest and pick the leaves that makes the difference in, in what tea you get.
[00:02:29] So interesting.
[00:02:30] And they are picking a lot of their tea by hand.
[00:02:34] Um, it was really interesting.
[00:02:36] So, the, um, Alex, who is also an avid reader and is going to listen to our podcast.
[00:02:42] Hi, Alex.
[00:02:43] Hi, Alex.
[00:02:44] Um, she was fantastic and extremely knowledgeable.
[00:02:46] And, um, it was kind of amusing because my husband is, um, a biologist and he deals with plants and like aquatic plant life.
[00:02:55] And there was a lot of similarities.
[00:02:57] So, they were like talking in this language that I had no idea what they were saying.
[00:03:01] And I was like, okay, so we're going to go and drink the tea now.
[00:03:04] Um, but it was kind of fun because it went with both of our interests.
[00:03:10] Yeah.
[00:03:10] That's cool.
[00:03:10] And so, we did that the first day we were there and then we ended up staying at a really nice Airbnb, um, that's on like 30 acres of property.
[00:03:17] And we were there one of the days by ourselves and it was very relaxing and very nice.
[00:03:22] Nice.
[00:03:23] Yeah, we were like surrounded by wood.
[00:03:25] So, like you felt, you didn't feel like you were in Louisiana.
[00:03:28] That's awesome.
[00:03:28] Which is nice.
[00:03:29] But still only being like an hour away.
[00:03:31] So nice to feel like you're not in your home state.
[00:03:33] I love that.
[00:03:34] Um, but yeah, I definitely think that we, you and I should go to the tea farm.
[00:03:39] Yes, absolutely.
[00:03:40] I really want to.
[00:03:41] I want to buy like a tea plant.
[00:03:43] And we did, we bought a tea plant and, um, have the tea.
[00:03:48] We did a tea tasting and it was really nice that they accommodated us because they were hosting a wedding and they were, um, getting ready.
[00:03:54] So they had stuff everywhere cause they were doing the rehearsal dinner was there.
[00:03:57] And then the, um, wedding was going to be on Saturday.
[00:04:00] And they actually just put on, um, the market a cabin on Airbnb.
[00:04:06] Oh, that's cool.
[00:04:06] Um, that you can rent out on the property also.
[00:04:08] That's neat.
[00:04:09] Yeah.
[00:04:09] And it has like a pond next to it that you can fish if you're there.
[00:04:12] If you like to fish.
[00:04:13] Well, you and I can go stay in the cabin together and have a nice little romantic getaway.
[00:04:16] Let's do it.
[00:04:17] Um, but yeah, it was just, um, I think that you would enjoy going, you know, it's not like a long tour.
[00:04:23] We were there for probably an hour doing the tour and the tasting.
[00:04:26] Um, but it's just interesting.
[00:04:28] And I, again, didn't know it existed in our state.
[00:04:31] That's really cool.
[00:04:32] I've thought before, like there's these online classes where you can become like a tea sommelier
[00:04:37] and a tea specialist and a whatever.
[00:04:40] And I've thought about doing those classes before.
[00:04:42] Just, I mean, as someone who loves tea this much, I want to be able to like knowledgeably explain it to people.
[00:04:50] Yeah.
[00:04:50] We need to talk to Alex.
[00:04:52] Yes.
[00:04:53] Alex, I'm coming for you.
[00:04:54] Alex and Hans.
[00:04:55] Hans is like the head, um, tea grower.
[00:04:59] Okay.
[00:04:59] Alex and Hans.
[00:05:00] Yeah.
[00:05:00] We're coming for you.
[00:05:02] Um, so anyways, but yeah, here to talk about books.
[00:05:07] Yeah.
[00:05:08] I'm excited because I can finally start talking about holiday books.
[00:05:12] Yes.
[00:05:12] I know.
[00:05:13] I know.
[00:05:14] This episode will be coming out after Thanksgiving.
[00:05:16] My first holiday book, uh, this week.
[00:05:19] I think it's my turn.
[00:05:20] It is your turn.
[00:05:21] Okay.
[00:05:22] I know because I edited last night.
[00:05:24] And so.
[00:05:26] Um, so my book is If I Were You by Cheska Major.
[00:05:31] Um, this was on my list.
[00:05:32] Oh, this was on your list.
[00:05:32] Yeah.
[00:05:33] Um, I will say I liked it, but it wasn't, I would say it's about a three and a half for
[00:05:39] me.
[00:05:39] Okay.
[00:05:40] Um, it was a Freaky Friday kind of take.
[00:05:43] Oh, this one.
[00:05:44] Yeah.
[00:05:45] Um, and I did like it.
[00:05:47] I thought it was well written.
[00:05:48] It just, I, I got a little bored here and there.
[00:05:51] Yeah.
[00:05:52] Um, but overall it was a good read.
[00:05:55] And maybe I'm in between a three and a half and a four.
[00:05:59] Okay.
[00:06:00] Um, so, um, Amy and Flynn have been dating.
[00:06:04] Uh, they think they've been together around two years or so and they are on their way
[00:06:09] to Amy's sister's wedding.
[00:06:11] Okay.
[00:06:12] Um, she's the maid of honor.
[00:06:13] She's been helping plan everything.
[00:06:15] Her sister is older than her and she's actually marrying one of Flynn's friends.
[00:06:20] Okay.
[00:06:21] That he grew up around.
[00:06:22] Um, he went to boarding school.
[00:06:24] Amy and her sister, I think her name is Laura.
[00:06:27] Um, they are kind of from like middle class background.
[00:06:31] It's a British novel.
[00:06:32] So they're, I don't know exactly where they are, but, um, but all we need to know is they're
[00:06:37] in England or something.
[00:06:39] Yeah, correct.
[00:06:40] Um, both of them kind of have hid some of their family background from one another.
[00:06:45] Um, there's a situation in regard to both of their fathers and how they were raised.
[00:06:52] And, um, Amy doesn't really have a good picture of who Flynn is because he on purpose tries
[00:06:59] to hide things from his past, um, that he's either ashamed of.
[00:07:03] Red flag, red flag, red flag.
[00:07:04] Or feeling, um, like he doesn't want to share cause he doesn't want to think about it.
[00:07:09] Um, so where we're at in the beginning of the story is that he has asked a
[00:07:15] asked her to move in together.
[00:07:17] And she feels even though they've been together for this period of time that she doesn't know
[00:07:22] him well enough to do that next step in his mind, he's thinking we're going to move in
[00:07:28] and I'm going to propose.
[00:07:29] Yeah.
[00:07:30] The logical next step.
[00:07:32] Right.
[00:07:32] The progression of a relationship.
[00:07:34] Yeah.
[00:07:35] Um, and she is put off by his ask and she's kind of hasn't been saying anything and she's
[00:07:43] been talking to her sister thinking, I don't know that I should be in this relationship.
[00:07:49] I'm not sure that this is right.
[00:07:51] I really have fun with him.
[00:07:53] I love him, but I don't know him.
[00:07:55] And how am I like, I don't understand what's going on.
[00:07:58] So because of her own insecurity insecurities and feeling uncomfortable about the situation,
[00:08:03] she starts to pull away and she's kind of being not very nice to him.
[00:08:07] Um, and he is very happy go lucky about everything and she's very high strung, but he's happy
[00:08:12] go lucky because he doesn't want to deal with anything.
[00:08:14] Yeah.
[00:08:15] He's really not.
[00:08:15] He has a lot of anxiety and a lot of issues.
[00:08:17] Yeah.
[00:08:18] So they are on their way to this wedding.
[00:08:22] It's, they're in the middle of like really bad traffic.
[00:08:25] Maybe they're in the middle of London.
[00:08:27] Um, she is ticked at him just from the get go.
[00:08:33] Anything he does, she's mad at everything he says.
[00:08:35] They get stuck in traffic.
[00:08:37] It starts like pouring down rain.
[00:08:40] They get stopped by like cows or something in like the middle of the countryside trying
[00:08:44] to get to this like really fancy venue.
[00:08:46] Um, so she's just like beside herself.
[00:08:49] Her sister keeps calling like, where are you?
[00:08:51] And this is for the rehearsals and they're not the way in the wedding is like this whole weekend
[00:08:56] extravaganza that she thinks is ridiculous.
[00:08:58] And, um, anyways, she's very stressed out.
[00:09:05] So she gets out of the car at one point because they're just yelling at each other in this
[00:09:09] car.
[00:09:09] They're being blocked by cows.
[00:09:12] It's pouring.
[00:09:13] He's yelling at her to get back in the car.
[00:09:16] They're just screaming at each other.
[00:09:17] And then the next thing they see is blinding white light and they wake up on the ground.
[00:09:24] And when they come to, they're looking at each other, but it's actually they're looking
[00:09:28] at themselves.
[00:09:29] Oh, they flipped.
[00:09:31] Mm hmm.
[00:09:33] I don't know how that.
[00:09:36] Hmm.
[00:09:39] Okay.
[00:09:41] Huh?
[00:09:41] I was expecting like the sisters were going to flip or something.
[00:09:44] They've hmm.
[00:09:45] Interesting.
[00:09:46] So they, of course, as you would imagine, start freaking out.
[00:09:50] Um, they get back in the car.
[00:09:51] They don't know what happened.
[00:09:52] They don't know how this happened.
[00:09:53] They don't know what to do.
[00:09:54] They obviously can't go to the wedding.
[00:09:55] There's just like extreme anxiety.
[00:09:57] Um, they decide they have to go to the weekend because it's her sister's wedding and
[00:10:02] her sister's counting on her and they're going to try to pull it together as best they
[00:10:05] can.
[00:10:07] Um, and chaos ensues.
[00:10:08] I just feel so awkward.
[00:10:11] It was uncomfortable and a lot of parts were super cringy.
[00:10:14] And I think maybe that's why I didn't love it because it was so, I was so uncomfortable
[00:10:19] and I kept thinking like, oh my God, stop.
[00:10:22] Like, really?
[00:10:23] Are you really, really, really?
[00:10:25] And it was just so bad.
[00:10:26] It was bad on both sides, but he was really uncomfortable and he made me feel cringe.
[00:10:32] Um, oh boy.
[00:10:35] So yeah, so we see how that story, I don't want to tell anymore because then it's just
[00:10:38] going to get away.
[00:10:39] But how it plays out and it's kind of a dumpster fire, but, um.
[00:10:44] That is an interesting, uh, hmm.
[00:10:47] But it does go into depth.
[00:10:48] We, we, um, all of the secrets of his past, everything that's going on with her as well
[00:10:53] in regard to her dad's passing because he has passed at this point.
[00:10:56] Um, we, we are uncover everything that happened and why he is the way he is and why she is
[00:11:02] the way she is.
[00:11:03] And they're learning things about each other cause they're in each other's bodies and things
[00:11:06] that they didn't know.
[00:11:07] And so they're like pressing on certain things cause they're like, well, I need to find like
[00:11:12] in her mind, she's saying, I need to find out, you know, I need to know.
[00:11:16] I think the thing that makes me most uncomfortable is like the thought of waking up in a man's
[00:11:20] body.
[00:11:21] And that's disgust.
[00:11:22] And it is very uncomfortable.
[00:11:24] And she says, how am I going to do this?
[00:11:27] And, uh, but she does also talk about, um, not just in sexual terms or like your, you know,
[00:11:35] your sexual organs and all that kind of stuff.
[00:11:38] It's disgust of feeling, um, strong and tall.
[00:11:43] And then when they have conversations, which I thought was, this was a, did think was really
[00:11:47] neat.
[00:11:48] How he's in her body, she's in his.
[00:11:50] And when they're arguing, I'm going to say she, but she's in his body.
[00:11:55] Right.
[00:11:55] And, um, he like cowers and, and she's like, oh my gosh, you know, this is how it feels
[00:12:03] to be a woman.
[00:12:03] And like, she, you know, she's like, I wasn't even trying to do anything, but she is bigger
[00:12:10] and stronger and more dominant.
[00:12:12] And, um, she said, wow, this is like a really crazy.
[00:12:16] Like dynamic.
[00:12:17] Like dynamic, you know, and for him to, you know, be kind of, whoa, like she can physically
[00:12:23] hurt me.
[00:12:24] Not that she was going to.
[00:12:26] It's just, it was weird.
[00:12:27] They do talk about that quite a bit.
[00:12:29] And she talks about how she feels more solid and she feels fit and you know, that kind of
[00:12:33] stuff.
[00:12:34] And it was really strange, but.
[00:12:37] Um, yeah, that was the word I was thinking as well.
[00:12:39] It's really strange.
[00:12:41] So there were parts that were funny.
[00:12:43] There was a lot of anxiety.
[00:12:44] There was some, um, depth to it.
[00:12:47] And then, um, some love story, some uncomfortable moments as you could imagine.
[00:12:55] Well, I, to be honest, I'm probably going to pass on this one.
[00:13:01] It was not fair.
[00:13:03] Like we already discussed how freaky Friday isn't my thing.
[00:13:06] And so now.
[00:13:08] I think it's, I think it's fair to pass.
[00:13:09] I think it has all the elements that we generally like.
[00:13:12] Like, it just didn't hit the five, five star for me.
[00:13:15] Fair enough.
[00:13:16] Well, I am super excited to tell you about my book.
[00:13:21] Um, I rated it four stars because I happened, I happened to start this on election night.
[00:13:32] And I don't think I was going to rate any book five stars that I started on that stressful day.
[00:13:38] Um, but it's the most wonderful crime of the year by Allie Carter.
[00:13:41] I think, was this on your list?
[00:13:43] Yes, it's on my list.
[00:13:43] And I have it coming up on my, on my hold.
[00:13:46] Okay.
[00:13:46] Well get excited.
[00:13:47] Okay.
[00:13:47] Okay.
[00:13:47] And let me tell you why.
[00:13:49] Okay.
[00:13:49] I want to reread it because I do think that I'll end up rating it five stars.
[00:13:54] But this is like part rom-com, part mystery, part, I don't know.
[00:14:00] It's just a little bit of everything.
[00:14:01] And it's so wonderful and perfect.
[00:14:04] So we have Maggie Chase who she's recently divorced.
[00:14:09] She's a writer.
[00:14:11] She's just not into being around people in general, but especially now because of her divorce, which was particularly not good.
[00:14:21] Mm hmm.
[00:14:21] So she goes to her publishers, um, like office Christmas party.
[00:14:30] She doesn't want to be there, but in walks her biggest rival, Ethan Wyatt.
[00:14:37] Um, Maggie is like the cozy mystery queen and Ethan is like the thriller guy.
[00:14:44] Like he writes all the thrillers.
[00:14:46] And so they're not really rivals in a sense of what they write, but they are just rivals in person.
[00:14:53] He always calls her by the wrong name.
[00:14:55] Like he always calls her Marcy and he's just not a nice guy in general to her.
[00:15:00] So she just hates him.
[00:15:01] Sure.
[00:15:01] So anyway, she's at this party and her, I don't know, like editor or something tells
[00:15:06] her that she has been invited to England.
[00:15:11] They live in the States, like New York.
[00:15:13] I think she has been invited to a Christmas house party at the English estate of a reclusive
[00:15:20] fan.
[00:15:21] It's like her number one fan really wants her to go to this estate for Christmas.
[00:15:28] And she's like, Oh, I don't even like being around people.
[00:15:32] And now you want me to get on a plane and fly to England for this person that I don't
[00:15:36] know to go to their house party.
[00:15:38] This just seems weird, but she ends up agreeing to it.
[00:15:41] She gets on the plane and who is sitting next to her on the plane, but her biggest rival,
[00:15:49] Ethan.
[00:15:50] Oh, yikes.
[00:15:51] Okay.
[00:15:51] He has also been invited to this Christmas party.
[00:15:54] So they arrive and this isn't giving anything away, but they find out that the their number
[00:16:00] one fan is like, it's Eleanor Ashley and she is the mystery writer.
[00:16:08] She's like the number one mystery writer in the world.
[00:16:10] They call her the Duchess of death.
[00:16:12] Oh my God.
[00:16:13] And she is like better than Agatha Christie.
[00:16:15] Okay.
[00:16:16] Okay.
[00:16:17] All right.
[00:16:19] So Eleanor has invited them, one other author, and then a few of her relatives over to her
[00:16:25] house for this Christmas party.
[00:16:27] It seems kind of weird, but like they're going with it.
[00:16:29] They get to meet this author that they are just crazy fans of.
[00:16:34] And then the next day they discover that Eleanor has disappeared out of a locked room.
[00:16:48] And they don't know.
[00:16:50] Did she lock them inside?
[00:16:52] No, she was in her office, which was locked.
[00:16:56] Okay.
[00:16:57] And she and she has disappeared.
[00:16:59] Okay.
[00:17:00] They don't know how she got out of the locked room.
[00:17:02] Okay.
[00:17:03] Um, and so Maggie is thinking like, is this a test?
[00:17:10] You know, is she trying to find the best author who can solve these clues?
[00:17:16] And Ethan is like, no, I'm pretty sure like someone killed her or something.
[00:17:21] So the two of them, um, embark on a journey to find Eleanor.
[00:17:27] Meanwhile, her relatives are just talking about how much money they're going to inherit from her.
[00:17:32] Basically.
[00:17:33] Yikes.
[00:17:34] Yeah.
[00:17:34] Mm-hmm.
[00:17:35] So it is quite an adventurous romp.
[00:17:38] It is very fun.
[00:17:40] Um, I did say there was a rom-com.
[00:17:44] There may be some rivals to lovers, uh, included in the story.
[00:17:49] Okay.
[00:17:50] And it was just massively fun.
[00:17:53] Good.
[00:17:53] Okay.
[00:17:53] Well, I'm excited to read it.
[00:17:55] Yay.
[00:17:56] And I actually, it came up with my holds, but I have too many books that I'm like already
[00:18:02] on my list.
[00:18:03] We'll put them aside for this one.
[00:18:05] I will.
[00:18:06] It should be delivered, uh, next week, I believe.
[00:18:08] Okay.
[00:18:09] Um, we can talk about the tea?
[00:18:10] Yeah.
[00:18:12] So this is another chapter's tea and coffee.
[00:18:15] It's called Poet's Study.
[00:18:17] And it says, inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's enigmatic, sorry, enigmatic and imaginative spirit.
[00:18:27] Should I start over?
[00:18:28] Yes.
[00:18:28] Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's, no, start again.
[00:18:32] Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's, say it, say the word.
[00:18:36] Enigmatic.
[00:18:37] Why does it sound, you know when words sound funny?
[00:18:40] I know that's how it is, but it sounds funny.
[00:18:42] Enigmatic.
[00:18:45] Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's enigmatic, I can't say it.
[00:18:48] Okay, let me do this.
[00:18:50] I can't.
[00:18:51] Sorry.
[00:18:52] Okay, Marissa has tried to read this one like 10 times and it's not happening.
[00:18:56] No.
[00:18:56] So it's moving on to me.
[00:18:58] Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's enigmatic and imaginative spirit.
[00:19:02] Fuel your creative pursuits one sip at a time and immerse yourself in the world of poetic
[00:19:07] genius and the mysterious Victorian Gothic.
[00:19:10] Each small batch is meticulously blended and tastes great hot or iced.
[00:19:15] This has been called the best Earl Grey I have ever tasted by some serious tea snobs.
[00:19:22] I was a little worried when we smelled the tea itself because it smells like soap.
[00:19:29] It is extremely strong.
[00:19:33] Um, good, good thing it does not taste like it smells.
[00:19:37] It does not.
[00:19:38] Um, I personally have had a better Earl Grey before in my lifetime, but I do think it's
[00:19:45] good.
[00:19:45] It is good.
[00:19:46] It's much, it tastes much better and it's much smoother than I expected.
[00:19:51] I have had better Earl Grays, but this is very good.
[00:19:55] And the ingredients are black tea, cornflower petals, and of course, natural flavors.
[00:20:00] I thought you were going to say bergamot because it's an Earl Grey, but nope, natural flavors.
[00:20:03] It doesn't have bergamot in it.
[00:20:04] Hmm, interesting.
[00:20:06] So it's not an Earl Grey.
[00:20:09] Um, yeah.
[00:20:12] But the cover is so pretty.
[00:20:13] Mm-hmm.
[00:20:14] It's a poet study.
[00:20:15] There's letters all over the desk.
[00:20:17] There's a cup of tea.
[00:20:19] There's ink and a quill and little drawers and a candle and a bust of someone with a raven
[00:20:27] on top.
[00:20:28] I want to be there.
[00:20:30] It gives fall Thanksgiving vibes.
[00:20:34] Sure.
[00:20:35] I was thinking more of winter, but, um, we'll go with fall and Thanksgiving.
[00:20:39] I don't know.
[00:20:39] When I think poets study, I think fall.
[00:20:41] So what is your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
[00:20:45] Ooh, dirty rice.
[00:20:48] Okay.
[00:20:49] You?
[00:20:50] Okay.
[00:20:50] Um, I generally like some form of sweet potato something.
[00:20:55] Okay.
[00:20:57] Um, but yeah, I don't know.
[00:20:59] I'm, I kind of switched.
[00:21:01] Sometimes I like different things, but I'm, I'm not, we're not overdoing it this year.
[00:21:05] Yeah.
[00:21:05] Well, so in my mom's, on my mom's side, we have dirty rice.
[00:21:10] On my dad's side, we have rice with gravy.
[00:21:13] Okay.
[00:21:14] Either.
[00:21:15] Yeah.
[00:21:15] I love both.
[00:21:16] Anything rice, apparently.
[00:21:18] Yeah.
[00:21:18] It's my go-to Thanksgiving dish.
[00:21:20] Yum.
[00:21:20] And favorite dessert?
[00:21:24] Ooh, it's a toss up.
[00:21:26] Um, because my mom makes my grandmother's cheesecake, which is like the best in the world.
[00:21:30] Mm-hmm.
[00:21:31] Um, but my cousin is making my aunt's red velvet cake.
[00:21:36] Oh, yeah.
[00:21:36] Which is also really good.
[00:21:37] Okay.
[00:21:38] I don't know.
[00:21:40] I, I, generally, I really like pecan pie, but we're not going to have it this year.
[00:21:44] I do like pecan pie.
[00:21:45] Um, if it's a really good one.
[00:21:47] I've had like chocolate pecan pie and that's pretty good.
[00:21:50] I, it depends.
[00:21:52] But I, this year we're just going to have pumpkin pie and apple pie with, um, ice cream,
[00:21:56] vanilla ice cream.
[00:21:57] Okay.
[00:21:57] So.
[00:21:57] I mean, pretty, pretty American, pretty Thanksgiving.
[00:22:01] Yeah.
[00:22:03] Yep.
[00:22:04] But, um, yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
[00:22:06] It's Finn's first holiday season.
[00:22:08] Well, this will be airing, um, after Thanksgiving.
[00:22:11] So I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving if you're listening from the States.
